Anorexia Nervosa, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder & Insomnia

I have struggled with anorexia and compulsive exercise for over 20 years. My anxiety had been unmanageable and debilitating. I have been on so many different medications and seen so many psychiatrists over the years, and I have never been able to find relief from severe anxiety, obsessive thoughts and strong urges.

I had lost all hope that any medication could possibly help me. Then, I was introduced to Dr. Emory. After meeting with him, I regained hope. Dr. Emory was very proactive in searching to find the best medication for me as an individual. From the beginning, he interpreted my symptoms and behaviors in a different way than other psychiatrists did and said that certain brain circuits probably needed to be sped up so I could control the urges to exercise.

I decided to get an EEG done so that Dr. Emory could analyze what was occurring in my brain and medicate me according to that. After my EEG, Dr. Emory put me on a combination of medications based on my results. I have never felt more free from my anxiety, obsessive thoughts and urges.

Now, I feel like a new person. I am calmer, happier and can focus better. Dr. Emory really cared about me, something I have not sensed from other doctors. His determination was incredible.

Dr. Emory has been a true blessing to me.

Attention Deficit Disorder & Expressive Language Disorder

I have been to several psychiatrists, neurologists and have tried many programs, none that have really made a difference in my son’s life. My son’s condition is classified as Mild Mental Retardation, a stroke in utero caused damage to the cerebellum.

I was impressed by the fact that Dr. Emory uses real medical data and not just opinions. When I heard that he measures brain waves and uses an E.E.G. and makes calculations based on facts I was eager to try it.

It was not until Dr. Emory started treating my son that we noticed a difference right away. We have made adjustments along the way with additional E.E.G. data and have fine tuned his mental capacity and emotional stability. My son is now doing things we thought he would never do. It has all been documented since we have started seeing Dr. Emory.

Dr. Emory is committed, available, and flexible to our needs. I have never met a doctor so professional and persistent to find a specific treatment for the needs of my son.

Attention Deficit Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder & Insomnia

I have been a sober member of a twelve step program on and off for almost thirty years. I first sought treatment for drug addiction in my teens and was hospitalized at numerous psychiatric facilities. I have seen countless psychiatrists, psychologists and been in a number of treatment facilities for substance abuse. I drank and used drugs for years.

As a result of drug addiction and substance abuse I ended up in some bad places and situations and contracted Hepatitis C from IV drug use. I was diagnosed in 1990 and was a test case for a new interferon drug made, which I was only able to tolerate for about 60 days. I was clean and sober at the time and was only using what was prescribed for the Hep. C, and that experience kept me from agreeing to take the treatment again for over 15 years. I had biopsies to track the progress of my liver and blood work and finally decided to take the treatment, as my viral load had quadrupled in the last year, even though I saw no real symptoms. I had never had energy since getting sober again, except in the morning with a lot of caffeine, and I had never slept well.

Before meeting with Dr. Emory, I believed that I could never take any “brain” medication and survive, especially with my relapse history. I was really scared. I had heard for too many years and too many meetings that taking anything could trigger my addiction all over again.

I met with Dr. Emory and gave him my history. He explained that people who chronically use a drug that allows them to feel normal are usually attempting to improve their brain function in some way, even if their drug of choice has side effects and is not the best for them. He also explained that every brain is different, and that the brain is an important part of the immune system.

I wanted Dr. Emory to first show me documentation that there was some sort of “imbalance” in my brain. I did not want him to prescribe something from just what I had told him. He told me that measuring my brain waves with an EEG was necessary to help him decide if medication was appropriate. What he said made sense, because I had known for years that I was self-medicating with my own treatment plan which had consisted of pure methadone which came from the clinic and was nontoxic to my liver and I functioned and went to work every day. I functioned for as long as I could – but was doing to myself what most doctors do to their patients; they guess and settle with what seems to work or is only a safe medication. So I agreed that if my brain was functioning at a 6 level and it could be a 10, then fine, I would do as he suggested.

Dr. Emory showed me the results of the EEG which showed that two types of medication could change my brain function and balance my brain activity; one medication would improve one part of my brain and energize me and a second medication would improve another part of my brain so I would be calm, but neither medication would be an opiate. This would probably help me through the Hep. C regimen and help me function better afterwards as well. What I did not know, and the EEG indicated this, was that my brain would be better without opiates. I began the prescribed medication regimen the same day I had the EEG.

After 8 weeks, when the liver medication hit its peak, we re-tested my brain with my current “brain” medication regimen, and sure enough, most of the imbalances seen in the first EEG were gone and I was getting through the treatment. I was able to work and exercise and realized so much about myself during that time. I had good days and bad days, but mostly good days. I persevered and make it through.

After 9 months, I am functioning better than I ever have and the Hep. C treatment is behind me. I am virus free and I will not go back to a life of mere survival and settle for less than being the best I can be. I have energy again, my mood is good, I have a sex drive again-thank you Dr. Emory – and I sleep at night.

It will take another 3 months to get all of the liver meds out of me at that point I will have another EEG to see how my beautiful unique brain looks on the “brain” medication.

I now understand that the deadly diseases we call Alcoholism and Drug Addiction are often the result of resourceful persons attempt to self medicate an imbalance in their brain function.

Today I aim for balance in all areas – body, mind, spirit, work, play – and I think more clearly and function better than ever. I still go to my meetings, still work the steps and still have a sponsor. But I know that I could go to all the meetings in the world and work all of the steps thousands of times, but without my brain working properly it would continue to be a challenge. I am truly grateful to have had this scientific treatment approach using the EEG test.

AA teaches that alcoholism and other drug addictions are a disease. Dr. Emory says that alcoholism and other drug addictions are usually a person’s attempts to self-medicate their sub-optimal brain activity. These abnormal states are inherited, can be measured, identified and treated without side effects. Like most caring physicians he agrees with the tenets of AA, CA, NA, etc. but he points out that attendance at meetings and following the teachings does not change sub-optimal brain activity. A person can learn to internalize the power of AA principles and also have the benefit of neuroscience.

In retrospect, I think how much easier my life would have been if, after I was detoxed and stabilized years ago, someone had administered an EEG and knew what medication would balance my neurobiology.

Thank you again Dr. Emory

Attention Deficit Disorder, Migraine Headaches & Substance Dependence

When I met Dr. Emory, I had been struggling with migraines for nearly twenty years. After my son was born, my migraines increased in occurrence and severity. I sought help from countless neurologists and had no relief. Still hurting and addicted to pain medication, I went to a treatment facility where I met Dr. Emory.

After a complete evaluation, he changed my medications and I began to improve. Since then, I have been on one medication and have not had a migraine in nearly ten years. Without a doubt Dr. Emory changed my life. He made it possible for me to experience life without pain. I am a happy, strong, fun person. I love being a mother and a wife and I never take anything for granted. Thank you Dr. Emory.

Sincerely,

Bipolar Disorder & Attention Deficit Disorder

For the past 1 ˝ years, since treatment was finalized, the main thing is that my sense of self has not been lost or discovered; it was cultivated and enhanced. Before treatment, it was as if my mind was stuck in neutral. Now I am able to shift into any gear I want. With my brain working well, I am able to manifest my desires and intentions upon the world.

Sincerely,

Bulimia Nervosa, Anxiety Disorder & Insomnia

Thank you for working with our teenage daughter and solving the underlying medical condition that was causing her eating disorder. My husband and I had watched her struggle with fatigue and abdominal and join pains for over three years. There were positive lab studies (auto-immune) and postural tachycardia that was ignored until you evaluated her for the eating disorder.

It is no wonder that she developed maladaptive behaviors during those years as she struggled with being told over and over by numerous medical specialists that there wasn’t anything physically wrong with her. My intuition told me differently, but we had to be respectful of each physician while continuing to challenge the medical community.

Our daughter tried to challenge them, but her young age, her eating disorder, and their inexperience prevented them from seeing the whole picture. Fortunately, a major turning point was your noticing her episodes of rapid heartbeats and your insistence that this was a key medical problem that was causing her severe depression, panic, and some of her eating disorder behaviors.

You advised us that she should have a Holter Monitor and see a cardiologist. A weight was finally lifted off our shoulders. It was so refreshing when the cardiologist concurred with your findings. Now, we know her medical diagnosis, that she was most likely born with this condition and that medication has restored her health.

Sometimes it’s the fear of the unknown that drives us all crazy. Once again thanks for all your help with this complex medical and psychiatric diagnosis.

Sincerely,

Grateful Mother

Depressive Disorder

I say with great sincerity and gratitude that you’ve done wonders for me.

There I was, thinking I was a hopeless case. I suffered from severe depression and anxiety and had shown little improvement after three-and-a half years of treatment from other psychiatrists. They gave me merely standard prescriptions based on hasty assumptions based on quick interviews. And, of course, they did no medical testing. It felt like cookie cutter psychiatry.

Dr. Emory’s treatment felt like no other treatment I had received, and it results in treatment far superior to any I’ve ever experienced. I wish more practioners would adopt your medical model. It works.

Dr. Emory did the opposite. Not only did he take the time to get to know me, but he performed medical tests (including EEGs) and developed a treatment model actually tailored to my needs. The results are remarkable, both physically and mentally. I even get compliments from others about how much better I am. It turns out I wasn’t a hopeless case at all. I just needed the right doctor.

You truly make my life better. Thanks so much and I look forward to seeing you again.

Best Wishes M.S.

Insomnia due to a Medical Condition

Our six year old son has had trouble sleeping since he was born with GERDS. He was also prone to anxiety. We have seen specialists since he was an infant. While we made some progress, he continued to suffer from disturbed sleep, sometimes being up hours a night.

Last spring our attention was grabbed when he had a seizure. That sent us on a new quest to find out what the pieces to the puzzle were. We met with several specialists, including pediatric neurologists. We finally consulted with Dr. Emory and part of our son’s evaluation was an EEG and quantified EEG [QEEG].

Based on a comprehensive medical assessment and our son’s QEEG reading, Dr. Emory proposed that we begin with naturopathic treatment using two amino acids. We purchased them from a health food store, began one at a time at a low dose and slowly increased the dose as we were instructed. Within a few weeks we gradually noticed some improvement.

After two months, things changed. Our son is sleeping through the night consistently for the first time in his life. He is alert during the day more than ever and he is excelling at school well beyond our expectation. We could not be happier or more grateful for Dr. Emory’s treatment method.

Migraine Headache, Attention Deficit Without Hyperactivity & Insomnia

When I started working with Dr. Emory, I was taking more than 5 prescription medications for depression, anxiety, insomnia and severe, chronic migraine.

All the medications had side effects and the longer I took them, the worse those effects became. I could barely drag myself out of bed each morning, and was completely unable to deal with any life stressors. I had no energy and avoided scheduling social events because I never know whether I would have the energy to go.

I believed that in order to treat my issues, I had to settle for the side effects, and I was resigned to living in the shadow of my former life. The irony is that I STILL had 2-3 severe migraines a week, still felt very anxious, still had depression. Even with the prescriptions, I wasn’t any better.

Dr. Emory stressed the importance of treatment that has NO ADVERSE EFFECTS. He told me that the side issues that my current medications were causing didn’t have to be part of my “treatment”.

Once we had completed the EEG session and found what was not working correctly in my brain, he devised a naturopathic treatment plan and I saw results immediately. Using Dr. Emory’s treatment plan, I now take a series of Amino Acids – all purchased at my local vitamin shop. The anxiety and depression are gone – yet I have a clear mind and energy to function like a normal person. Even better – the migraines are nearly gone! I have 1-2 minor migraines during a 10 day period (instead of 2-3 SEVERE headaches each week) and those are immediately stopped with the single prescription migraine medication that I now use. I no longer live in fear of the ‘next headache’. It’s an amazing sense of freedom.

Dr. Emory continues to work with me. Although I am a long distance patient, not living in the LA area, Dr. Emory and his team provide me superior care. They are always available, competent and helpful.

I tell everyone that I meet about Dr. Emory and his use of naturopathy in my treatment process!

NEUROLOGICALLY SPEAKING, MY BRAIN HAD A TWEAKING (A Poem)

Since music & words are interests to share
I challenged myself to a creative dare
Utilize brainwaves with poetic latitude:
Shape metric rhyme into genuine gratitude

I’ve had it with guesswork in neuropsychiatry
And findings NOT based on electroencephalography
For expertise reading this mind’s undulation
I happily witness your fine reputation

Your dosage adjustment and gentle fine tuning
Is lifting my psyche-a conscious ballooning
Of creative urges with focused duration
With no tachycardial quickened pulsation

I hope you’ll forgive me this silly endeavor
This medium’s message is not to be clever
But mirror my joy of new consciousness coming
The light of your knowledge has pierced through the numbing

Dr. Hamlin Emory I hope you’re aware
I’m recalled to life because of your care3
Your generous gift has been magic to me
I celebrate your method and your qEEG
