Q. What happens at the initial appointment?
A. The initial appointment usually requires an hour, during which a patient's main symptoms and chief concerns will
be detailed. The medical history, family history and comprehensive review of the bodily systems will be reviewed.
The doctor will assess both emotional and cognitive capacities. Then, he will explain his conjecture about the patient's
brain physiology and its interactions with their bodily physiology. The doctor may also order lab values to rule out any
medical diagnosis that could "artifact" (e.g. distort or introduce an inaccuracy in) the initial EEG. An individual who
is not consuming medication will likely be able to schedule a baseline EEG in the same or following week. Dr. Emory will
allow some patients to have their initial EEG while using their medication, but each person's circumstances are individualized.
If Dr. Emory recommends that medication be discontinued before the EEG, he knows how to help you do it with the least physical
discomfort. The appointment for the first EEG and the results generally requires two hours.
Q. How often are the appointments after the first EEG?
A. This is different for each patient. In the beginning, patients usually follow up every few weeks for thirty minutes
or less, to enable Dr. Emory to precisely determine the best treatment regimen. Once stabilized, most patients usually follow
up every few months. Others follow up every six months to a year. Each person's requirements are different. Dr. Emory is careful to
request the minimal frequency of follow-up appointments that can assure quality medical care.
Q. Is it necessary to have an EEG?
A. Yes. Dr. Emory’s therapeutic method relies on the EEG and quantitative EEG [qEEG] results as well as other objective
information to determine optimal treatment selection for each person's brain type.
Q. What if I live in another state?
A. Patients often travel to our office from other states and other countries for assessment and consultation with Dr. Emory.
Each patient must submit the forms provided on this site for Dr. Emory’s review prior to scheduling the initial consultation
with him in Los Angeles. A member of the office staff will contact new patients to schedule the first meeting, lab work and
a follow-up appointment. Several comfortable hotels are within a few blocks of the office for convenient overnight stays.
Patients are expected to see Dr. Emory in person as frequently as necessary to allow for quality medical care. In certain cases
and in appropriate circumstances, Dr. Emory can conduct follow-up consultations with a patient using SKYPE video conferencing.
Dr. Emory can also collaborate and coordinate with the patient’s local
physician for continuing care, as needed.
Q. Does Dr. Emory use naturopathic as well as
allopathic medications?
A. The answer is yes. In fact, Dr. Emory's knowledge
of the EEG & qEEG biomarkers allows him to predict each
patient's
probability of responding to naturopathic
medication. Dr. Emory is familiar with over 120
medications and routinely personalizes
each patient's
regimen to obtain the optimal outcome with the least risk.
He is not biased toward either approach and may
advise
using a combination of each medicinal
type.
